News : Teacher Forced to Resign After Slapping Student

NC teacher resigns after video surfaced of her pulling a student’s ...

A South Carolina teacher who is seen stomping on the desk of a dozing student, slapping his face and pulling his hair has resigned from her position. There are many in the Anderson County town where she has taught math for nearly three decades, who are fighting to get her back.

Dozens marched to the district office from Palmetto High School on Thursday, May 3. Among them were students present and past who believe that Lisa Houston was wrongfully pressured into leaving her job at the school after 27 years.

Houston got into hot water with district officials after they saw a recording that was initially posted to Snapchat, which shows her getting physical in an effort to keep one of her students awake. In the video, students are heard laughing as she stands atop one particular young man's desk and spends a pretty lengthy period of time violating his personal space.

In recognizing her actions as unprofessional, Houston voluntarily vacated her position before much could have been made of it. But the community has in large part expressed regret that the fall out could not have been handled differently, with over 1,400 people signing a petition to bring her back within 24 hours of the protest, and a school board member (Doug Atkins) going so far as to step down over her early retirement.

Many have attested to Houston's style being playfully affectionate and even Julian Johnson, who is the father of the youth who she was mishandling, has come forward to state that the family regrets how the whole situation has played out. “I didn’t call for her to be fired. I wish it would go away and that it never happened,” he is reported as saying.

Local news station WYFF did manage to get a hold of Houston to get a statement on the ordeal. “I know the video looks bad. If you don’t know the situation, you don’t know what’s going on, but it was not a malicious act. It was all in fun. I want the public to know that I love the student, and that our rapport with each other was great. I would have never done anything to hurt him,” she said in response.
