But should they also be associated with cigarettes?

A company in Florida is using the Gombey image on its cigarette packets. Gombey Cigarettes are made and sold by President Tobacco LLC and the tagline is: ‘The original flavour of Bermuda’.

And some of our Gombeys, while not quite hopping mad, are certainly perturbed.

“It goes completely against what our Gombey culture stands for,” says Bilal Binns, vice-captain of Warner Gombeys.

“I don’t think they should be sold,” agreed Wayne Raynor, leader of H and H Gombeys. “It’s not a way to put forward Gombeys.”

It’s not only the Gombeys who think the cigarette tie is a drag.

Ex-Police Commissioner and former PLP senator Jonathan Smith expressed his dismay on Facebook. He wrote: “This caught my attention today. A package of ‘Gombey’ cigarettes, complete with a Bermuda tagline.

“What? Gombey cigarettes!? I looked further. Manufactured in the USA by President Tobacco LLC using tobacco grown in Virginia and the Carolinas. Nothing Gombey about Virginia and Carolinas that I know of. There’s more.

“This tobacco company is only licensed to sell in six states in the USA. Yes, six states, not the other 44. And yet, we have a tobacco company [using] our very own Gombeys. Heck, a Gombey can’t even smoke a cigarette with his face mask on!”

Bounty Killer celebrated his 41st birthday last weekend at Sugarman Beach in Portmore, St Catherine. It was during selector Boom Boom’s set that the surprise came.

“Him (Popcaan) deh Canada pon tour and him send a voicenote to him sister and tell him sister fi mek sure mi get the song. Mi mek the link wid har and she burn it off pon a CD and mi just premiere it at the party,” Boom Boom said.

In the voicenote, Popcaan said, “Yuh done know a Popcaan a represent fi Bounty Killer the legendary. Yuh done know today a yuh special day so mi just waan seh on behalf of me and the Unruly Gang, big up yuh damn self.” This was followed by an a capella version of one of his songs, Party Non Stop.

Bounty Killer told THE WEEKEND STAR that he was surprised by the birthday greeting.

“I was a bit surprised but it touched everybody. I went to his birthday party at the Quad too so there is a mutual understanding,” Bounty Killer said.

The Court heard that in April 2013 she was stopped after being seen swerving while driving, and admitted to Police that she had consumed “two or three glasses of wine.”

Ms Cannonier served as a One Bermuda Alliance candidate in the 2012 General Election. She contested C#3 St Davids, a seat won by the PLP’s Lovitta Foggo.

Defending her, lawyer Saul Dismont argued that she lived in St David’s and that the nature of her work required her to move around with correspondence and files that she carried in her car.

He told Senior Magistrate Archie Warner that Ms Cannonier, who is the Premier’s sister, was about to start work with a major project and that if she was disqualified from driving and forced to use buses and taxis, it would negatively impact her work.

The Senior Magistrate said that the recent uncovering of the fact that Magistrates were not obligated to automatically disqualify all persons convicted of driving whilst impaired, meant that Magistrates could exercise discretion.

Ms Cannonier was fined $1,500 but was not disqualified from driving.

2 Chainz and his entourage were casually walking down the street Sunday afternoon when at least 2 men approached the crew and pointed guns at them ... one in a white shirt, the other in a black hoodie.

2 Chainz and his crew immediately scattered -- frantically trying to sprint down the street while the gunmen chased after them.

One of the gunmen seemed to be having fun during the incident ... and gleefully skipped after the rapper while 2 Chainz tried to get away.

During the chase, 2 Chainz stumbles and falls ... and one of the gunmen pounces ... hovering over the rapper with his gun drawn.

According to police, the bad guys jacked 2 Chainz for his cell phone and wallet. Towards the end of the video, you can see a man running back up the street with what appears to be the loot stuffed under his clothes.

Under the category: "Who ya gonna believe, me or your lyin' eyes" ... 2 Chainz later posted a tweet denying he was robbed ... saying, "Rule #1 if a rapper gets robbed people usually post items that has been taken."

As far as the bad guys, so far no arrests have been made.
